PreCapture Description
Richard Simpson was working on a concentrated war offensive of the war known as Linebacker II in December 1972. On the first day the Linebacker II B52s were flying over Hanoi, an aircraft named the Charcoal 01, that Simpson was flying, was hit. He was subsequently taken captive as a Prisoner of War. The Charcoal 01 was the first of 15 B-52s shot down during the 11-day campaign.
